JSR 286 - Pluto - Tomcat (not! 268 as some states)

Java Specification Request (JSR) 286 is a standard , released in its final form on 12th of June 2008. It extends JSR 168 (backward compatible with few exceptions). The specification is easy reading for those familiar with Servlets. It carries a functional detailed definition of how Java-basered Web components (portlets) are administrated under a (portlet) container.

JSR 286 objective beyond JSR 168 are to provide:
  • better support for AJAX to provide asyncronous update of Portlets
A disadvante is that the standard will be quite new. Implementation in established application servers will take time.
